Rosehaven's museums and heritage function is concerned with understanding, preserving and sharing the area's local history and civic heritage. It can support collections, interpretation, heritage activity and opportunities for residents to explore the stories and material evidence connected with their community.
Understanding Rosehaven's heritage
Heritage can include objects, records, places, traditions and other evidence that helps explain how an area developed. The council's role is not to declare every old or locally valued thing to be a council asset. It is to take a coherent approach to the heritage responsibilities and collections that are actually placed under its care and to work appropriately with communities and other organisations.
Museums and collections
A museum service requires more than a display space. Collections need clear ownership or custody, documentation, appropriate care and decisions about acquisition, access and interpretation. Public information should tell visitors what a museum holds, how to visit or use it and what services are genuinely available.
Community participation
Local knowledge can be important in understanding heritage. A commenced council can involve residents and organisations in appropriate heritage activity, make local history easier to discover and connect museum and heritage work with archives, libraries and wider community participation.
Current position
Rosehaven Council has not opened a museum or heritage venue and has not established a council collection, grants programme or public heritage service. Existing places, collections or community projects are not being relabelled as council provision. When Rosehaven assumes responsibility for a genuine facility, collection or programme, practical visitor and access information will be published against that service.
